Newton Halbert Copping
December 4, 1928 – January 19, 2024

In the early morning of January 19, 2024, Newton Halbert Copping passed away peacefully as a result of natural causes at the Champlain Long Term Care Residence, L’Orignal, Ontario. Newton was 95 years old.

He was born in Montréal, Québec, to Newton and Helen Copping (nee Halbert) in December 1928. Newton worked for Bell Canada for 44 years, supporting many different and varied business customers and their evolution across a variety of telecommunication technologies before retiring in 1991.

Newton was a Freemason for over 60 years. He was a member of Thistle Lodge No. 96 in Montréal, and RW Newton H. Copping served as Master of the Lodge (1973) as well as Deputy Grand Master, District No. 5 (1997). He was also a Karnak Shriner, supporting the Shriners Hospital for Children. When Newton wasn’t busy helping others, he enjoyed canoeing, fishing, and trail motorcycle riding.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Newton Cuthbert Copping and Helen Bell Copping (nee Halbert), his sister Margaret Patterson (John), his son Robert, and his nephew Gordon Patterson.

Newton is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia Copping (nee Labrador), his daughter Dawn Uniat (Mike), his step-sons Christopher Labrador (Jean) and Anthony Labrador (Wendy), his grandchildren Thomas, Andrew, Michael, and Emily, and his niece Janet Patterson.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the clinical and support staff at the Champlain Long Term Care Residence for their kindness and exceptional care.

A Masonic memorial service is planned for Newton at the Rideau Funeral Home, (4239 Sources Blvd, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Québec) on March 30, 2024. Visitation, service, and reception will be at 1:00PM, 2:00PM, and 3:00PM, respectively. In memory of Newton, donations made to the Shriners Hospital for Children would be appreciated by the family.

A Tree of Remembrance for Newton will be planted in the McAlpine Forever Forest, Vankleek Hill.
